Happiness is everything

The World Health Organisation talks about the need for physicians to be interested not just in the absence of disease but in each persons positive well-being. There can be little more reflective of a persons well-being than their happiness. There are lots of things that make people happy but good health when you have it tends to be the least focused on and often taken for granted. But it is perfectly possible to be in poor health and still be happy. However for some people happiness is often focused on external things a holiday, a relationship, job or money. Once those things are attained happiness will follow.

In truth happiness is an internal matter. For many it is a faith, a strong a powerful faith helps many overcome life’s ups and downs. But there are others which I have had the privilege of looking after – sometimes people with severe illness – who still functioned at their best, never complained and actually were so happy that they helped make those around them happy. Some of this positive well-being may be genetic but some is due to mental habits or tricks which can be learned or unlearned. There are tools which psychologists tell us can help us feel happy. Two tools I use are to try to focus on the moments as they go by and to slow down and enjoy the small everyday things.

I came across this review of different books, which I thought I would share and perhaps could help yourself or others that you know. It includes some summaries and video links. Let me know if there is any other resources that you think might benefit others.

Thanks for your comments Patty.
We have all had periods of our lives when we were unhappy or things were tough. Some people seem to spend their whole lives in those situations, but are able to be happy whereas others are not so lucky. The article I linked to had information that might benefit people in a number of different situations to increase their chance of feeling happy perhaps despite everything.
