Can we make school meals healthier?

by Stephen on 2010/02/15

I attended the Cayman Heart Funds fundraising gala evening last night and was pleased to hear from Suzie Soto along with the other attenders about the Cayman Heart Funds plans for the rest of the year. The one that got the most applause was the  plan to look at school meals and to see that could be done to improve them.

Its been many years since I have attended school so I am not sure exactly what to expect these days from a school meal. It certainly makes sense to encourage healthy eating by ensuring that these meals are not high in salt and have no trans-fats. These should be plenty of vegetables and fruits. Sodas and salty snacks should not be available within the school grounds. These I would have thought should be self-evident. The difficulty may be getting children brought up to eat a more unhealthy diet to eat healthier choices. But healthy does not have to mean unattractive or unpleasant.

One person in the UK has been on a campaign to improve school school dinners is famous UK chef Jamie Oliver. He had a TV show in the UK (and soon to come out about going into US schools) where he would go to a school and look  at the food they were eating – from both quality and health and  getting them to convert to better quality and both healthy meals without getting more expense.

Watching a few of his programs might help how and maybe how not to go about this. Maybe he would be interested in coming to Cayman.

This is a talk he gave on the famous TED conference.
